Let’s Prep:

Before we get into the cooking, let’s talk about the prep work. I always find that the smoother the prep, the more enjoyable the cooking process. So, let’s gather our ingredients and get everything ready.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb Breakfast Sausage
  • 4 Hot Dog Buns
  • Powdered Sugar for garnish

French Toast Mixture:

  • 2 Eggs
  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp Sugar
  • 1/2 C Whole Milk

Maple Hot Sauce:

  • 1/2 C Maple Syrup
  • 1/2 C Hot Sauce (your favorite brand)

Start by separating your breakfast sausage into four equal parts. This might sound like a simple step, but it’s crucial for ensuring that your sausages cook evenly. If one sausage is thicker than the others, it might take longer to cook through, leaving you with some sausages that are done and others that are still raw in the middle. To avoid this, try to divide the sausage as evenly as possible. This small attention to detail can make a big difference in the final dish.

Next, let’s mix up our French toast batter. In a medium-sized bowl, crack two eggs and add 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon of sugar, and 1/2 cup of whole milk. Whisk everything together until it’s well combined. This mixture is the key to that classic French toast flavor we all know and love. If you’re someone who likes a little extra cinnamon or sugar in your French toast, feel free to add more to taste. Remember, this dish is all about making breakfast fun, so don’t be afraid to make it your own!

Now, take your hot dog buns and get ready to dunk them in the French toast mixture. Here’s a little tip: when you dunk the buns, do it quickly. You want to coat the bread with the mixture, not saturate it. A quick dip on each side—no more than a second—should do the trick. If you leave the bread in the mixture for too long, it can become soggy, which can lead to uneven cooking and even burning. A quick coating will give you that perfect golden-brown French toast without the risk of charring.

With your sausage divided and your buns ready to go, it’s time to get cooking!

Let’s Cook:

French Toast Dogs are on the way

Cooking French Toast Dogs is a lot of fun because you get to see how the flavors come together in real time. It’s one of those recipes where the process is just as enjoyable as the final product.

Start by preheating your griddle to medium-high heat. If you don’t have a griddle, a large skillet will work just fine. While the griddle is heating up, let’s prepare the maple hot sauce. In a heat-safe container, mix 1/2 cup of maple syrup with 1/2 cup of your favorite hot sauce. This sauce is optional, but I highly recommend it. The combination of sweet maple syrup and spicy hot sauce adds a whole new dimension to the dish. Once the sauce is mixed, place the container on the griddle to heat it up.

Next, place the sausage on the hot griddle. Cook each piece of sausage on all sides, rotating them to ensure that none of the sides burn. You’re looking for a nice, even browning on the outside and an internal temperature of at least 165°F to make sure they’re cooked through. As the sausages cook, you’ll notice the kitchen filling with that irresistible aroma of sizzling breakfast sausage—a sure sign that something delicious is on the way.

Now, it’s time to cook the French toast buns. Place about 2 tablespoons of butter down on the hot griddle and place the buns on top. Cook the buns for about 3-4 minutes per side, just until they start to crisp up. You’ll know they’re done when there’s no more moisture on the bread, and the outside feels crisp to the touch. You’re looking for that perfect golden-brown color—anything darker, and you risk charring the bread.

Once the buns are done, set them aside and continue cooking the sausage until it’s fully cooked through. The combination of the crispy French toast buns and the juicy sausage is what makes this dish so special. The contrast in textures is something you don’t often get in a typical breakfast, and it’s part of what makes French Toast Dogs such a standout recipe.

Let’s Eat:

Now comes the best part—putting it all together and digging in! To build your French Toast Dogs, take each cooked sausage and place it inside a French toast hot dog bun. Drizzle the warm maple hot sauce over the top and finish with a dusting of powdered sugar. The result is a breakfast dish that’s both visually appealing and incredibly tasty.

When you take that first bite, you’ll immediately notice the contrast of flavors and textures. The French toast bun is slightly sweet and crispy on the outside, with a soft, tender interior that’s soaked up just the right amount of the French toast mixture. The sausage is juicy and savory, providing a perfect balance to the sweetness of the bun. And that maple hot sauce—wow. It’s sweet, it’s spicy, and it ties everything together in a way that’s simply irresistible.

French Toast Dogs are a dish that surprises and delights. They take the familiar flavors of French toast and breakfast sausage and turn them into something new and exciting. It’s the kind of recipe that makes you look forward to breakfast, whether you’re cooking for yourself or sharing it with others.

And here’s the thing: while this dish is perfect for breakfast, it’s also great for brunch, lunch, or even dinner. There’s something about the combination of sweet and savory that feels just right at any time of day. Plus, it’s easy to make and fun to eat, which makes it a winner in my book.

Recipe Notes:

When making French Toast Dogs, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • When dividing the sausage, try to get them as even as possible so they cook at the same speed.
  • Feel free to add more cinnamon or sugar to the French toast mixture if you prefer a stronger flavor.
  • Be quick when dunking the bread in the French toast mixture. A fast dip will coat the bread without making it soggy, leading to a more even cook.
  • You’ll know the French toast buns are done cooking when they’re golden brown and no longer feel moist to the touch. Look for a crisp exterior without any burnt spots.
  • The maple hot sauce is optional but highly recommended. It adds a sweet and spicy kick that elevates the entire dish.

So there you have it—French Toast Dogs, a breakfast that’s sure to become a new favorite. Give it a try, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself making this dish again and again. After all, who wouldn’t want to start their day with something as delicious as this? Happy cooking!
