What are Pasta Chips?

Pasta chips are a viral TikTok recipe that blew up on social media.

Basically, you cook pasta, coat it in seasonings, then bake or smoke it until it’s crispy and crunchy. It’s not hard like dry pasta – it shatters for the most irresistible crunch.

A bowl of uncooked farfalle pasta is ready to be made into pasta chips. The pasta is next to a wedge of cheese, a small container of grated cheese, and a grater. A bottle labeled Orozza is in the background on a blue textured cloth. The scene is set on a wooden surface.

Ingredients

  • Bowtie pasta – You can also use different types of pasta. Look for a shape that can hold a lot of seasoning and flavor.
  • Seasonings – I used a mixture of garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and freshly grated parmesan cheese. For extra flavor, I also added some O.M.G. Seasoning to take the flavor over the top.
  • Extra virgin olive oil – To help get the spices to coat the pasta and give it a nice crispy texture.
  • Fresh parsley (to garnish)

How to Make Pasta Chips

  • Cook pasta until al dente according to package instructions.
  • Drain pasta and rinse the cooked pasta under cold water to help stop the cooking process. Otherwise, the pasta can turn mushy.
  • Preheat your smoker or oven to 375F.
  • In a large bowl, combine pasta, seasonings, and olive oil, mix very well.
  • Place seasoned pasta on a baking sheet. Try to keep to a single layer, but double is fine in a pinch. The pasta needs enough space to crisp up nicely.
  • Place the baking sheet in preheated oven or smoker for 15 minutes, give a toss, and cook for another 15-20 minutes. The edges should be golden brown and they should be nice and crispy.
  • Remove from tray, and garnish with more fresh parmesan cheese and fresh chopped parsley.

Pro Tip:

Keep an eye on the pasta chips during the final minutes of baking to prevent them from burning. The exact baking time may vary depending on your oven or smoker and the type of pasta you’re using.

Storing Suggestions

Since these pasta chips are coated with cheese and herbs, it’s best to eat them right away.

Tips & Variations

  • Use gluten-free pasta to make a gluten free snack.
  • Adjust the seasonings. There are so many different seasonings you can use on these, like ranch seasoning, Italian seasoning, your favorite dry rub, and more.
  • Try different pasta chips. Bowtie pasta is pretty perfect since it has a large enough surface area to hold the toppings and seasoning. It’s just one of many options, though. Try it with a different shape of pasta to see which one you like the most.

How to Serve

To serve, transfer the pasta chips to a serving platter and garnish with freshly grated parmesan cheese and a sprinkle of chopped fresh parsley. The parmesan adds a lovely, salty finish that complements the garlic seasoning, while the parsley adds a touch of freshness and color.

We love to serve these viral pasta chips with different dips, like marinara sauce, fresh pesto, or a creamy garlic dip.

They make a great appetizer before serving your favorite Italian dishes like spaghetti, lasagna, and more.

FAQs

Can you make pasta chips in the air fryer?

Yep, you can use the air fryer just like the a regular oven. In this situation, it’s best to drop the temperature of the air fryer about 15-25 degrees to avoid burning the edges of the pasta. The batch size will vary depending on the size of your air fryer. For easy clean-up, spray the air fryer basket thoroughly with cooking spray.

Which pasta shapes are best for pasta chips?

You can use any kind of pasta, but you want a shape with enough surface area to hold onto lots of seasoning. Bow ties are great, but you can also try rigatoni pasta, penne, or even broken lasagna noodles.

Do you have to cook the pasta first?

Absolutely! If you’ve ever tried eating dried pasta, you know it’s very hard and not easy to chew at all. To turn them into a snack you can pop and eat, you need to cook the pasta first, then dry it out and crisp it up. Cook the pasta al dente, rinse it right away to cool it down, then coat with seasonings and bake or smoke.
