When it comes to hot dog recipes, these are always a very simple food to cook for the backyard cookout, tailgate, or a quick meal for the family. Grill your hot dogs, put them in a bun and add your toppings. What if we flipped that on it’s head though and took a very simple recipe, and made it more delicious without adding much complexity. That’s exactly what I’ve done here with this hot dog recipe. It’s simple, it’s delicious, and it’s wrapped in bacon, how could a hot dog recipe possibly get any better ?
Let’s Prep:
This hot dog recipe is super simple, and doesn’t require much more work then cooking “regular” (READ: boring) old hot dogs. The first step to getting everything ready is to make sure you’ve got a clean workspace, and your ingredients are within reach.
I always prefer to work in an assembly line fashion when I’m cooking for family and friends to increase efficiency. This makes the process quicker, easier, and more fun. First step though is to gather all of your ingredients and have them ready near your workspace. This will include:
- Hot Dogs
- Bacon
- Queen Bee Seasoning
- Toothpicks
- Hot Dog Buns
Now that we’ve got everything where we need it to be, the very first step is to get our hot dogs wrapped up like a hot dog mummy in the bacon. Depending on how large your hot dog is that you’re using for this recipe, you might be able to get away with wrapping in one piece of bacon. For these, since I used such a large hot dog, I used 2 slices of bacon.
Be sure to try to wrap as much of the dog as possible to make sure this hot dog recipe has as much bacon in each bite as possible. When you wrap your hot dogs, try to overlap the previous wrap by just a little bit to ensure full coverage and go from top to bottom in a diagonal fashion – you’ll get better coverage that way.
Stick a tooth pick in both ends to make sure that your bacon stays put and doesn’t open up while cooking and you’re ready for the next step.
Once you’ve got all of your dogs wrapped for this hot dog recipe, it’s time to season. For this recipe I recommend Queen Bee Honey BBQ Seasoning as it adds the perfect touch of sweetness to this recipe to balance off the salt flavor from the hot dog, and bacon. (More on flavors later). Cover the bacon wrapped dogs all the way around and allow them to sit for a few minutes to have the bacon absorb some of the flavors.
Let’s Cook:
Let’s get this hot dog recipe cooking!
Once the meat is ready it’s time to put them in your oven/ grill or smoker to cook. Aside from the flavor of the smoke added from the smoker, it doesn’t matter how you cook these as they will be cooked using indirect heat (not direct flame of a grill for example). I prefer cooking these in my smoker as I’m a fan of the smoke flavor, however you’ll get the same result in your oven or grill as long as your keep your temperatures steady for the duration of cooking.
As you’re cooking these – patience is key. You’re going to want them to be cooked and ready to eat ASAP – but trust me here, good things come to those who wait. We’re essentially baking these while adding smoke flavor (if cooking in smoker), so we want to make sure the bacon gets cooked through. When this is done, the hot dog will be ready. This process will usually take between 45 minutes to an hour, so you’ll want to keep an eye on them at the end.
There can be variance due to the size/thickness of the bacon and hot dogs. Some will take a little longer to cook than others. Make sure you’re cooking this hot dog recipe until the bacon is beautiful amber color on the outside, and the bacon is crisping up. Don’t burn it though!

Let’s Eat:
Once the dogs are off the heat, it’s time to finish off this hot dog recipe before we eat. Now obviously, this hot dog recipe (as with all of them) can be modified to your liking, however for this one I’ve garnished with pickled jalapenos, and sriracha mayo. I found that the balance of the pickle flavor for the peppers, and slightly spicy profile of the mayo with it’s creamy texture brings this entire recipe together.
