A burger patty topped with shredded cheese, a slice of cheese, and three slices of pepperoni, sits on a wire rack over a wooden surface. A person in dark clothing is visible in the background.

The provolone adds a nice creaminess, while the shredded mozzarella melts beautifully over the top. Then, there's the pepperoni, which gets just the right amount of crispness when grilled. It’s a simple combination, yet each layer elevates the other. Plus, who doesn’t love the smell of burgers sizzling on the grill?

Let’s break down what you’ll need for this mouthwatering creation:

How to Make It

First up, let’s get that grill preheating. I usually aim for medium-high heat so I can get that nice sear on my patties. While the grill is heating up, season both sides of the hamburger patties generously. I love a good burger seasoning, but feel free to play around with your favorites. Maybe you want to add some garlic powder or paprika for a kick? Go for it!

Once the grill is hot, it’s time to lay down those seasoned patties. Grill them for about 5 to 7 minutes on one side. Keep an eye on them. You want them browned and almost cooked through. This is where the magic happens. Flip them over and place a slice of provolone on top of one patty. Then stack the second patty on top. It’s a towering masterpiece, and trust me, it’s going to be worth it.

Two raw hamburger patties, seasoned with black pepper, sit on parchment paper atop a wooden surface. A person wearing a dark t-shirt stands behind the patties.

Now, sprinkle the shredded mozzarella over that glorious stack. I can already hear the cheese bubbling! Go ahead and add a sprinkle of your favorite Italian seasoning. This is where it really comes together. Close the lid and let it cook for another 3 to 5 minutes. You want the cheese fully melted and the pepperoni nice and crispy.

An open-faced burger on a wooden surface, topped with melted cheese and pepperoni slices, with the bun’s top half placed behind it. A blurred wooden fence and round window are in the background.

While that’s happening, I usually prepare the bun by toasting it lightly. A little crunch on the outside will hold up better against all those savory toppings.

Once the cheese is melted and the pepperoni is crisped just right, it’s time to assemble. Grab that toasted bun and spread pizza sauce on both the top and bottom. This step is key - don’t skip it! Place your double stack on the bun and get ready to dig in.

Tips / Variations

I love this recipe just as it is, but there’s always room for creativity in the kitchen. Want to add some veggies? Sautéed mushrooms or bell peppers would be a fantastic addition. Or maybe swap out the provolone for something like pepper jack if you want a spicy kick.

If you’re a fan of extra sauce, feel free to drown that burger in pizza sauce. Just remember, too much sauce might make it a bit messy, and you don’t want to lose that beautiful cheesy goodness.

Serving Ideas

These double pizza burgers are perfect for a backyard BBQ. Serve them with some crispy fries or a fresh salad on the side. I’ve even been known to serve them with a side of garlic bread because, why not? For drinks, a nice cold soda or a light beer pairs well with the richness of the burger.

I like to put out some extra toppings like diced jalapeños or a variety of sauces so everyone can customize their own burger. It turns dinner into a fun, interactive experience.

Closing

So there you have it: my take on the double pizza burger. It’s a simple, fun dish that packs a punch in flavor and satisfaction. Whether you’re grilling on a sunny day or just craving something hearty, this recipe is sure to hit the spot. Give it a try, and don’t be afraid to make it your own. Happy grilling!
