Let’s Prep

Before we get cooking, let’s gather everything we need. The homemade French onion dip is the star of the show, but the bread loaf? That’s the best part because it doubles as both a bowl and a snack!

A round loaf of rustic bread is placed next to a container of Deans French Onion Dip on a wooden surface. The bread has a golden crust, and the dip container features images of onions and green accents on the label.

To get this delicious french onion dip start with a sourdough bread bowl—a big, round one works perfectly. Using a small serrated knife, carefully cut off the top of the bread bowl and scoop out the inside of the bread, leaving a sturdy 2-inch-thick shell. Trust me, this shell will hold all the ooey-gooey goodness. Save the chunks of bread for dipping later—they’re like little flavor sponges to soak up all of the french onion dip.

A hollowed-out round loaf of bread sits on a textured wooden surface, with a piece of the removed bread placed beside it.

Now, preheat your oven to 350°F. Grab a large baking sheet and line it with parchment paper. This step saves on cleanup later (you’ll thank me).

Let’s Cook

I cooked my bacon in the oven all at once. Check out recipe for cooking perfect bacon in the oven. However you do it, cook it until it’s until crispy and let the grease drain off of it. Chop it into bits once it’s cool enough to handle. The smoky crunch is going to take this delicious dip recipe to the next level.

A white bowl filled with shredded cheese, bacon bits, and a creamy mixture is placed on a wooden surface. Next to it is a round loaf of bread with the top cut off. A container of Deans French Onion dip is in the background.

Next, mix up the filling for the french onion dip recipe. In a mixing bowl, combine the homemade French onion dip, half the shredded mozzarella, and your chopped bacon. Stir until it’s a creamy, cheesy dream. Spoon this cheese mixture right into your prepared bread bowl.

Pile the rest of the mozzarella on top of the dip. If you’re like me, more cheese is always the best thing. Place the bread bowl on your prepared large baking sheet and pop it in the oven. Measure this with your heart!

Bake the french onion dip for 40-50 minutes at 400F, or until the dip is hot and bubbly, and the cheese on top is melted. If you want a little extra char, switch the oven to broil for 2-3 minutes. Just keep an eye on it—you want golden, not burnt!

It’s worth noting that the timing of the cooking could vary depending on a number of factors. You can use an internal read thermometer to make sure the internal temperature of the french onion dip gets to be above 150F – at that point, everything will be melted.

Let’s Eat

Now for the fun part: digging in! Serve the bread bowl hot and gooey with the inside of the bread chunks on the side. This easy way to enjoy the french onion dip recipe is sure to wow your guests. You can also add some potato chips for crunch or even sliced veggies if you’re feeling fancy.

The moment the brie melts into the dip, and the gruyere cheese starts bubbling, you’ll know it’s ready. It’s the ultimate game day snack or a standout side dish for any occasion. And let’s be real—who can resist a warm, cheesy party appetizer like this?
