If you’re on the lookout for a hot dog topping that stands out from the rest, look no further. I’m excited to share with you a delightful twist on the standard pickle relish: spicy pineapple relish! The sweet pineapple and the fiery jalapenos are so good together. The combination really balances hearty, meaty flavors, and couldn’t be much easier to make!

The right sauce or relish can take your recipe over-the-top, and that’s exactly how I feel about this pineapple relish.
It’s really easy to make, requires only 3 ingredients, yet adds an incredible flavor to any recipe. It’s sweet, tangy, spicy, and sharp, cutting through the fattiness of bacon-wrapped hot dogs, smoked pulled pork, and so much more.
This is one of my go-to condiments, and I’m sure you’ll feel the same way about it!
The sweet, tangy flavor of pineapple works wonderfully with BBQ. This Bacon Wrapped Pineapple with Fireball Glaze is an out-of-control appetizer that disappears as soon as you serve it!

Ingredients
- Crushed pineapple – You can also use fresh pineapple and dice it finely.
- Diced jalapenos – To reduce the heat, remove the seeds and veins or consider substituting a green or red bell pepper. For more heat, use a hot pepper like a serrano.
- Diced red onion – This adds a nice crunch and an extra sharpness.
- Salt and pepper
How to Make Pineapple Relish
- In a bowl, combine the diced jalapenos, diced red onion, and crushed pineapple.
- Add in the salt and black pepper, then mix everything well. Serve right away.

Storing Suggestions
Any leftover relish can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. The flavors really come together after the mixture sits for an hour or two, or you can make it the night before your party or potluck.
Tips & Variations
- Grill the pineapple. Grilled pineapple has a sweet, smoky flavor that works wonderfully here. Remove the outer skin from the fresh pineapple and cut it into long strips. Grill it for a few minutes on each side to get some char marks on it, then mince and use instead of the crushed pineapple. You may need to add a little lime juice to add the moisture you normally get from the canned pineapple.
- Add citrus. Some fresh lime juice works really well in this recipe, too.
- Sweeten things up. Feel free to add a little hone, brown sugar, or white sugar for a sweet-spicy condiment.
How to Serve
I usually use this tangy relish as a topping for hot dogs, specifically bacon-wrapped hot dogs. I recommend using King’s Hawaiian Hot dog buns, too. They add a level of flavor and soft texture that complements the hot dogs perfectly.
Place each hot dog in a bun and top generously with the pineapple jalapeno relish.
But, that’s just one option! You can also eat it like a salsa with tortilla chips, spooned over grilled chicken breasts, and so much more.
FAQs
Can you use fresh pineapple?
Yes, but just keep in mind that fresh pineapple has a slightly different texture and flavor from canned pineapple. It won’t be quite as soft and saucy and will have more of a pico de gallo-like consistency.
