A red silicone brush is applying honey over freshly baked dinner rolls resting on parchment paper in a metal baking tray. The rolls are golden-brown and shiny from the honey glaze.

Preparation:

First, I preheat my oven to 350F. Then, I pan sear the meatballs in a little olive oil until they have a nice crust on the outside. I cook them over low-medium heat until they reach 160 internal.

Freshly baked bread rolls topped with melted cheese and sprinkled with herbs and spices on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. The golden-brown crust glistens under the light, and the open woven texture of the rolls is visible.

Cooking:

While the meatballs are cooking, I carefully cut the core out of the middle of each Hawaiian roll. I make sure the hole is big enough to fit the meatballs without cutting through the bottom. I then fill a saucepan with marinara sauce and let the meatballs simmer on low heat for 20-30 minutes to really absorb the sauce flavor.

Next, I take a small pinch of mozzarella cheese and place it in the bottom of the bread in each cut-out hole. I brush the entire top of the bread surface with melted butter and add pizza seasoning liberally. I insert each meatball into the bread, pushing down slightly but being careful not to break the top of the bread. Finally, I add the rest of the mozzarella cheese.

I put the meatball sliders on Hawaiian rolls in the oven to bake for 10-12 minutes until the cheese is melted and the bread is crusty. If the bread starts to get too dark, I remove it immediately.

Serving Suggestions:

I serve my meatball sliders Hawaiian rolls hot with marinara sauce for dipping or drizzling. They are the perfect appetizer or main course.

Recipe Notes & Pro Tips

The biggest tip that I can give you is to either have a very sharp knife, or a serrated knife to cut the cores out of the Hawaiian rolls. This helps to prevent tearing.

Another suggestion is to use a good quality marinara sauce for the best flavor. I also find that using pre-made meatballs makes this recipe even quicker and easier. I love to make meatball sliders on Hawaiian rolls with frozen meatballs if I’m in a rush. It’s a quick and tasty dish. Just make sure they are fully thawed before cooking.
