Ultimate Smoked Tomahawk Beef Ribs Recipe for Bbq Lovers

Why This Recipe Works

The key to perfect smoked tomahawk beef ribs is patience and proper technique. By starting at a lower temperature and gradually building up the flavor, you're setting yourself up for success. I love using a mix of seasoning that complements the beef without overpowering it.

Plus, the spritzing with broth or water keeps the meat moist and adds an extra layer of flavor. You’ll find that every step contributes to that mouthwatering result we all crave.

Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to get started on this flavor-packed journey:

• 1 rack tomahawk beef ribs (about 4 to 5 bones)
• Your favorite beef BBQ rub
• Water or beef broth, for spritzing
• Beef tallow (optional, for wrapping)

How to Make It

First things first, preheat your smoker to 275°F. This temperature is perfect for allowing the ribs to cook low and slow, breaking down all that delicious connective tissue. While the smoker is heating up, it’s time to prep those ribs.

Grab your rack and trim away any hard fat and silver skin from the top. This step is crucial because it allows smoke to penetrate the meat and reduces the chances of the finished product being greasy. Flip the rack over and make a few light cuts in a crosshatch pattern on the membrane. This helps the smoke work its magic.

Next up, season those ribs! I like to be generous with my BBQ rub here. Don’t just dust the top; make sure you get the bottom too. You want every bite to be packed with flavor.

Once seasoned, place the ribs in your preheated smoker and let them cook for about 90 minutes. During this time, I like to relax and enjoy a cold drink-because this is all about taking it easy.

After the 90 minutes are up, it’s time for some spritzing. Grab your water or beef broth and lightly spritz the ribs. This not only adds moisture but also helps develop that beautiful bark we all love. Keep an eye on them and spritz as needed. You want to continue cooking until the ribs are probe tender, which usually happens when they hit an internal temperature of around 203°F to 207°F.

At this temperature, the meat should be soft and juicy. Depending on the exact size of your rack and the specifics of your smoker, this whole process usually takes about 4 to 5 hours. Don’t stress too much about the clock; each rack is different. Just keep checking until you hit that perfect tenderness.

Once the ribs are good to go, remove them from the smoker. If you want to take it to the next level, wrap them tightly in foil with a little spoonful of beef tallow. This adds richness and helps keep everything moist while resting.

Let those wrapped ribs rest at room temperature for about an hour. This step is key! It stops the cooking process and allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat. Trust me, skipping this part can lead to dry ribs, and we definitely don’t want that.

Tips and Variations

If you’re feeling adventurous, try experimenting with different types of wood for smoking. I often switch things up with hickory, but apple or cherry can add a nice sweetness as well. You could also play around with your rub. I’ve tried different blends, and honestly, they all have their own charm.

Keep an eye on the cooking time and temperature. If you notice the ribs are getting too dark too quickly, you can always wrap them in foil earlier than planned. It’s all about adjusting to what your meat is telling you.

Serving Ideas

When it comes time to serve, the presentation of these tomahawk beef ribs is half the fun. You can slice them into individual ribs for serving, or leave them whole and let everyone dig in family-style.

Pair them with classic sides like coleslaw, baked beans, or even a nice potato salad. I also love serving them with a tangy BBQ sauce on the side for those who like a little extra kick.

Closing

Smoking tomahawk beef ribs is more than just a cooking method; it's an experience. The rich flavors, the tender meat, and the joy of sharing it with others make it worthwhile every single time. So grab your ingredients, fire up that smoker, and let the good times roll. I promise, you won't regret it!

Ingredients

• 1 rack tomahawk beef ribs (4 to 5 bones)
• Your favorite beef BBQ rub
• Water or beef broth, for spritzing
• Beef tallow (optional, for wrapping)

Instructions

• Preheat your smoker to 275°F.
• Trim away any hard fat and silver skin from the top of the ribs. Flip the rack over and lightly score the membrane on the bone side in a crosshatch pattern to help the smoke penetrate.
• Season the top and bottom of the ribs generously with your favorite beef BBQ rub.
• Place the ribs into the preheated smoker and cook for approximately 90 minutes.
• After 90 minutes, lightly spritz the ribs with water or beef broth. Continue cooking, spritzing as needed, until the ribs are probe tender, typically when the internal temperature reaches 203°F to 207°F.
• At 275°F, these ribs generally take 4 to 5 hours to cook. However, don’t cook by the clock. Every rack is different, so always cook until the ribs are probe tender and reach an internal temperature of approximately 203°F to 207°F.
• Remove the ribs from the smoker. If desired, wrap them tightly in foil with a spoonful of beef tallow for added richness.
• Let the wrapped ribs rest at room temperature for about 1 hour. This stops the cooking process and allows the juices to redistribute.
• Serve immediately, or hold the wrapped ribs at 160°F for up to 6 hours before serving.
